Utah, Moments in Time, an elegant, sophisticated coffee table book, is photographer Michael Wickes’ tribute to the Desert, Alpine, Farm, and City sections of the state and a celebration of it’s richness and diversity–from the shimmering lights of the Salt Lake City skyline to the staggering beauty of Canyonlands National Park. Calhoun Productions (Michael Wickes) managed all production and distribution of this book and related products. See “About Michael” for some of the buyers.
His tribute to the state is the story of a photographer and his dog in an old Airstream looking for the Utah that is beyond the “red rock” scenery.
“I discovered that Utah has a landscape unequaled in the West: stark salt flats, rugged red-rock country; graceful farmlands. And of course, mountains, sacred mountains–skied, climbed, hiked, explored–each teeming with enough wildlife to have forced Noah to order a second ark. I found that the cultural tapestry of Utah is quilted with Mormons, Gentiles, Native Americans, Hispanics, saints, sinners, and even a few scoundrels.”

Critical Acclaim
“Utah, Moments in Time is an exquisite book that uses simplicity as its strong point. And it does. so effectively.
The desert-like colors of the dust jacket provide an unusually effective backdrop to the remarkable design. Each element-and there are only four-works so well with the others that you find yourself lingering over the jacket just to savor its down-to-earth yet extraordinary personality. I am particularly appreciative of the placement of the title, and its vertical line with its letters facing the fore edge. This truly is unique among this year’s entrants and, I suspect, among its more numerous bookstore competitors. It took time for me to appreciate it-and I am not sure that is a good thing from a marketing standpoint but it is a design that will stay with me for a long time to come. It is memorable and therefore unique .
… I view this jacket as the most courageous of this year’s entrants. It seems to me to be a leading edge cover design, and I commend the publisher for extraordinary vision in the design.
That courage and that vision continue on the flaps. To use them as flavor rather than a marketing tool is to take a chance. But I think it is a chance well worth taking. It ensures that the potential reader must go further into the book and actually look at it rather than making a decision based on the jacket copy. Bravo! …
Photographs are of the highest quality and reproduced well. A generous use of white space provides the essential mental and emotional room for contemplation.
The Field Notes section was particularly well done. I thought the photographer’s personal thoughts on each image gave a personal feel to the book. It has the effect of allowing the reader to share in the photographer’s choices rather than just be a passive recipient.
This book’s design is unique among its competitors in several aspects, primarily in the cover design. It takes courage to go against the grain, but I think this might help rather than hinder the marketing of the book. At any rate, it is a superb design and I commend the publisher on a fabulous book.”
