UT, Moab. Eric Bjornstad [famous climber, guide, guidebook author].
A closer portrait of Eric Bjornstad (famous Utah climber, guidebook author), became the cover of my “Utah, Moments in Time” book.
UT, Snowville. Rancher.
Another shot of hard-working hands, in Snowville, UT.
UT, not sure where.
Not sure where.
UT, Oakley. Rodeo queen.
Rodeo queens are special.
UT, Ogden. Ogden Raptors pitcher.
Bill Allard, one of my photographic heroes, did a wonderful National Geographic story on minor league baseball. I was thinking of him as I shot the Ogden Raptors.
UT, Oakley. Rodeo, gymkhana rider.
The image’s offset framing of this girl and her horse is unusual, and it surprised me that I did it - and it worked.
UT, Filmore. Ranch hands and paws.
Ranch hands and paws.
UT, somewhere?
Somewhere beautiful.
UT, somewhere?
This was a restored church, not a temple, somewhere in the mountains.
UT, Cedar Mesa. Ranchers free ranging stock.
This horse hung around me as I was photographing Anastasi petroglyphs near Cedar Mesa. So, I fashioned a hackamore (bitless bridle) out of a long dog leash and jumped on him bareback. No problems at all…just a really nice horse and trusting/foolish rider.
UT, Virgin. Mayor’s grandchildren.
This was one of the most popular images in the book. I sent the kids into the attic of the Virgin, UT courthouse and had their mom, outside, hold their attention as I balanced on the roof of my truck and shot many frames. I had no idea this shot would be so popular.
UT, Cedar Mesa. Anasazi home.
No photo can do justice to this stunning Anasazi ruin on Cedar Mesa.
UT, West Valley. Allan June [original Navajo code-talker] with his wife. .
I was honored to photograph and meet with Allan June (and his wife), one of the original Navajo code-talkers.
UT, Vernal. Chew Ranch, Dean Chew and son.
The light and the weather cooperated for a short time at the Chew Ranch sheep pens - Dean Chew and son.
UT, St. George. Ex-fundamentalist Kelly.
I had originally planned on avoiding the “polygamist” issue, but the opportunity for time with (ex-fundamentalist Mormon) Kelly, was really interesting.
UT, Univ. of Utah. Senior swimmer.
I was in a wetsuit and had a scuba tank in teeth chattering cold water. This stoic guy never shivered once. This split-level photography calls for a complex array of underwater housing and filters.

“By May 1st, my birthday, I was on the road, giddy with anticipation, driving highways, then smaller roads, and eventually nameless trails. In that way, I was able to brush up close against the land, to meet the people, to find rhythms.

Utah has many mountains- a few sacred,  many skied and hiked, some just left alone-  each teaming with enough wildlife to have forced Noah to order a second ark.

I founds that the cultural tapestry of Utah is quilted with Mormons, Gentiles, Native Americans, Hispanics, saints, sinners and even a few scoundrels.

I met an agreeable mix of flaks with names like Ada, Doke, Nino, Joe, Darla and White Crane. We shared Diet Cokes or iced-tea while we chatted. “You betcha,” was the usual answer to a request for assistance. These are the kind of folks you want around if your car dies. As they drive the back roads, one hand rests atop the steering wheel, always ready to wave.”
